Why do we fear change so much? So many times as people we will settle for the mediocrity of life rather than risk a change that may elevate us to such purpose and significance that we cannot even imagine. Living life to the fullness will involve making some decisions that will not be comfortable or even easy. Many times they will not even make sense. The Bible is full of times when God expected people to make huge changes in their lives. When God delivered the children of Israel out of Egypt, He had them do so many things that made absolutely no sense whatsoever. God commanded them to get out of their comfort zones and possess what He had already given them. When Joshua took over and it was time to finally take that step and go into the promised land, God spoke to him.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." (NIV)
Everything that Joshua needed is lined out in this one verse.
God reminded Joshua first and foremost that he had a call, a command from God to do what he was about to do. Realizing that we were all created with purpose and realizing that God has something greater for us to do that we can even imagine is a key to our success.
For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)
We are His handiwork or workmanship, some versions say masterpiece. We are created with great purpose.
He told Joshua to be strong and courageous! If we want to make change come alive in our hearts and lives we will have to be strong and courageous. We will have to overcome the fear that can completely shut down our motivation, strength and courage. We will have to look discouragement in the eye and know that we will not be moved from what God has called us to do.
The most important thing that God told Joshua is this – “I will be with you wherever you go!” We do not face this life alone, God is with us. He has gone before us to prepare the way. We have to take a step and God will walk with us. We will have to look at ourselves and begin to see what changes need to be made. We need to examine our own lives and then begin to take the necessary steps,
Michael Jackson sang a song called “Man In The Mirror” that talked about change.
"I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you want to make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make that
Examine your life, examine the “Man In The Mirror” for yourself. Don’t fear change because you do not walk alone.
